Let me do the Math … A narration.
By: Haritha Reddy
Kitu in good sense what are you gonna do about your Math tests .. They are coming up next weekend . "Nothing Mommy " Kitu said ." My teacher told me I am Very good at Math. "

So much goes for a 6 year old kid these days. Hardly knows how to count between his fingers. All he can count is 2 digit numbers. Sits in front of a TV all day watching those cartoons. By now even I know them byheart. About a bear who keeps running around a lake. Won't be long before I hear a bear story. He comes up to me now often for a bear hug. That's what mama bear gives the kid bear he says.

I sometimes woner how to handle his questions or tastes. He wants to sit in a house "that is facing a roller coaster "and "he likes to sit in front of the roller coaster watching the roller coaster come towards him" with great speed and just before it can come even closer to him. It has to bend down beneath the house and slide down close into the sea and then just before touching the sea it has to rise up again and start sliding upwards. Mind you where does this leave the house. The house has to be on the sea. In front of the roller coaster bridge with windows on opposite sides so that my dear kid can see the coaster sliding down as well as going up.

"London Bridge is falling down. London Bridge is falling down. My fair Lady " There goes his song.. I guess that's where his imagination started from. Not to mention the fact that our apartment does not even have windows facing opposite directions.

My kidoos uses his fingers to count numbers .So he can't count beyond two digits as I was talking about. .I started him to get beyond it . Use "BODMAS(Brackets of division Multiplication addition substraction)" or "BODIPS"(Brackets of division into plus and subtraction). I have expaned the rule to make sure all of you are very well aware of that rule.

I guess he had a total cram session with me . Not being able to catch up. No wonder he woke up in the evening crying and started telling me a story. Here goes folks. I think you will find it very interesting. Kitu supposedly failed the Math Test. And the teacher told him " Kitu you are no good. You will never do well in life " . Kitu looked scared so I held on to him. "It's ok honey it's just a dream". Kitu goes on . " I felt like everyone was going ahead and I had problems following them. It was snow all over and I was up to my knees in snow . My teacher and I walked towards a lake. Fresh with snow. And then there my teacher asked me a question . "Kitu what is 'a at the rate 25'". I guess my BODIPS rules had really upset his sleep. Kitu looks at him with big sincere eyes and says " I think at the rate of 25 means "of "" and "of" should come before brackets . My teacher said "You are wrong Kitu" .I dunno what I said Mommy. We were in a lake and snow was projecting out as in a jetty and all of a sudden my teacher stretched out both his arms towards the lake. . The ice cracked except behind us and crystal clear water emerged. . A boat came towards us. The teacher caught the hood of my yellow jacket and lifted me up as though I was a light feather and put me on a boat that goes nowwhere . He waved bye to me.I was so scared being in the middle of nowhere in a small boat. He hugged me so tightly and I wondered what I had done.

"Oh honey" It was just a dream. "Mommy I don't; want to do BODIPS " Kitu said . Well I was thinking kids really do come with natural excuses. I guess this means I have to put it off for another week or so. Kitu is back to watching the bear video now. He has not told me about a bear dream though as of yet.

Aren't bear's more scary. ?? . Or maybe is he just cooking it up to escape BODIPS.. I look at him and his unabashed sincere face. Oh I guess that's not possible. On second thoughts when he can cook up a story like London Bridge what is it so special about the Math test. Next time I should try an Amar Chitra katha on him. Heard that they are in print....
