The permanent resident card or green card is the evidence of a legal right to live and work in the United States. The validity of a US green card is 10yrs. The expiration date is printed on the front side of card. A green card must be renewed within six months before the expiration date to maintain permanent residency in USA.
How to renew your expired green card ? The Green card can be renewed by filing Form I-90 with USCIS. Application for renewal can filed online or by submitting it via postal mail along with the applicable filing fee.
If your are traveling during the last 6 months of the validated time, you must return back to the US before one year from the departure date and before the card expires.
If you do not return to the US before the card expires, you must contact the nearest American Consulate, USCIS office, or Port of Entry, before attempting to file Form I-90 for a green card.

Green card renewal fee is $365 (effective Nov, 23, 2010) and a biometrics fee of $85. Both fee must be paid along with the Green card renewal application form I90. These two fee can be paid together combined in one check or money order.

Green card renewal application Form I-90 is used for filing green card renewal. A form I-90 can be downloaded from the official USCIS website or by calling a toll-free no. 1 (800) 870-3676. Renewal can also be done online; please check Introduction to E-Filing for more filing information.
All green card renewal applications (form I-90), regardless of the state of residence, must be mailed with application fee of $365(effective nov, 23, 2010) and a Biometrics fee of $85 to one of the following addresses:

Do NOT include any initial evidence and supporting documentation when submitting the Form I-90 to the Los Angeles Lockbox.
All applicants will receive an appointment notice for a biometric processing at an ASC (application service center) near you in the mail and will also specify the documents to be submitted at the time of appointment.
Once you file the application via mail or e-file, you will receive a case number with the receipt notice via mail. This case number should be used for all your application status tracking purpose. You can either check your Green card renewal status online at USCIS website or you may call the USCIS National Customer Service Center (NCSC) at 1-800-375-5283. All information regarding your application such as your receipt number, Alien Registration Number, name, and date of birth should be handy when making the call.
If an application for green card renewal is rejected or denied , a notice via mail will inform you of the reasons for the revoke, and notify you of the proper appellate jurisdiction and the applicable deadlines, and provide you with the correct USCIS form to file an appeal.

Note for Conditional Residents : If you are a conditional resident and your status is expiring, these instructions do not apply to you. In that case, you must use appropriate Forms Petition to Remove the Conditions on Residence, to apply to remove the conditions on your permanent resident status.
Form I-90 is not applicable for conditional residents. If you are a conditional resident and your status is expiring you must apply accordingly to remove the conditions:
- If you became a conditional resident through a marriage to a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident, submit Form http://www.uscis.gov/I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence; or
- If you became a conditional resident based on a financial investment in a U.S. business, submit Form http://www.uscis.gov/ I-829, Petition by Entrepreneur to Remove Conditions.
