Pick your favourite food joint

If you are hungry and have no time to cook, don't worry. There are plenty of restaurants and fast food chains through out USA . Some of the very popular ones are Denny's (Open 24 hours), KFC, Burger King, Mc Donald's, Pizza Hut, Carl's Jr., Sub-way, Mexican Restaurants, Italian Restaurants, Indian Restaurants, Chinese Restaurants etc.

Thoughtful tips before you order your food:
  • Don't hesitate to ask and find out what is in the dish before you order.
  • Are you a Vegetarian? No Problem. Just be careful while ordering. Specify "no meat" or tell them to "hold the meat". But don't say anything else like "without meat", "meat-less" etc., as they don't understand these terms.

If you are ordering soup, please mention very clearly that you want a vegetable stock and not the chicken stock in your soup. Most soups in the American kitchen come with the basic chicken stock.

Some vegetables have different names in the USA. For example 'okra' instead of ladies finger, 'egg plant' instead of brinjals and so on. If you are confused about an item in the menu, don't feel shy to ask if it's a vegetarian ingredient or not.
  • Remember, Buffet is cheaper than individual dishes
  • At Indian restaurants, you will usually get four categories of food: "Buffet", "Thali", "A La Carte" and individual dishes.
  • At the restaurants, you won't find finger bowls. You'll have to use paper napkins.
  • At fast food joints, you would be asked if the food is for "Here" or "To Go"? "Here" means to have it there itself, and "To Go" means packed/ parceled. Don't tell them to 'parcel', tell them that you want to take it home.
  • At most American restaurants, it is a custom to tip the server (not waiter, mind you). Normally a sum of 10% of the check (not bill) at the minimum is given.
  • In most restaurants you will find buffet. If you finish your plate and want more, leave your plate on the table, and use a new plate. The server will come and clear it up.
  • If you go to a restaurant in America which is not a Fast-food place, but is a Dine-in place, don't go and occupy any empty table. Wait at the front desk and let someone assist you in getting seated.
  • When you want a drink without ice, specify "No Ice", and not "Without Ice".
  • Some of the Indian Restaurants don't accept debit/credit cards, e.g. in New York city you will find many Indian restaurants displaying "Cash Only".
