| Organic food is natural food as against genetically
modified (GM) food. Most food that we consume today
are coated with chemicals and fertilizers. They are
also genetically altered to yield more, which results
in more quantity but not in quality. Organic food produce
is healthier because they contain 50% more vitamins,
minerals, enzymes and other micro-nutrients than intensively
farm produced. Why Organic food is better for you? It is said
that an apple you buy in the market today has on an
average of 20-30 artificial poisons on its skin, even
after rinsing. Organically produced food and flowers also taste and
smell so much better. Fruits, flowers and vegetables
are full of juice and flavor, and they come in many
different varieties. Compare an organically produced
rose fragrance with those that are sold en masse in
the floral markets. The ones that are farm produced
only look good but they don't even smell like roses,
what's a rose without its fragrance?
Organic, whether you are a Veggie or a Non Vegetarian
It is all the more important to go organic if you are
a meat eater or if you consume dairy products. Intensively-reared
dairy cows and farm animals are fed on a harmful mixture
of antibiotics, hormones, anti-parasite drugs and many
other medicines on a regular basis, whether they have
an illness or not. These drugs are passed directly onto
the consumers of their dairy produce or meat, which
is often attributed to be a contributing factor to meat-related
diseases such as coronaries and high blood pressure.
Affects biodiversity: Organic farms support
and nurture the beauty and diversity of the wildlife.
It is said that intensive farming across the globe has
led to dramatic erosion of the soil, a fall of up to
70% of wild birds in some areas and the near extinction
of some of the most beautiful species of butterflies,
frogs, grass-snakes and wild mammals. For centuries since the time human beings started cultivating,
land remained sustainable. But only 50 years of chemicals
use in cultivating agriculture has now raised many questions
related to the productivity of land and continuously
increasing cost of cultivation. Health hazards: In addition to the rising cost of cultivation,
non organic and intensive farming can also be hazardous
to farm workers' health. These workers are exposed to
much higher instances of cancer, respiratory problems
and other major diseases especially more so in developing
countries, like India where they cultivate cotton farms. Not just in agriculture products but pesticides are
found even in bottled products. Nearly all the major
bottled products (including Bisleri, Kinley, Aquafina
and Bailley) that were available in India, except Evian
(France) tested in Chennai,
contained pesticide residues. Eat healthy, live healthy: Awareness about the products
you consume is the key and many non profit organizations
are campaigning against non organic and health hazardous
products. It is not very far fetched to say that what
you eat today has a direct impact on the health of the
future generation.
