Tips
As soon as one arrives in US for work, he/she is
required to get Social Security Number (SSN) immediately.
It's a simple procedure, you will have to go to
the nearest SSA office, fill up a form and show
your passport and visa. You will get a receipt against
it, and in 2-3 weeks you will get your a social
security Number card via mail on your residence
address. Keep this card at a very safe place and
make a copy of it and keep it in your record. You
may follow-up your SSN after 4-5 days of your application,
and can get this number over the phone by calling
SSA office, given on the receipt you got or a toll
free number 1-800-772-1213.
Without a social security number you can't legally
start you job/work here.
It's a unique number given by the social security
administration (SSA). Each individual in Unites
States is required to be registered with government
by law. Since it is a unique number being used as
a key for your identification to track your record,
and in almost all the paper works, whether it is
your Income tax, Bank account, Driving license,
Telephone connection etc. Everywhere you are asked
to provide this number.
Your social security number is a 9 digit number
made up of 3 parts called the AREA (XXX), GROUP
(XX), and SERIAL (XXXX). First 3 digits tell the
state where you applied it, second and third part
generally not have any significant meaning, except
that they are unique in sequence.
SSA web site is www.ssa.gov.
Why is it
important to keep the Social Security number private?
Your Social Security number is
frequently used as your identification number in
a wide variety of computer data base, like your
bank account, your credit report, your tax information
and so on. Any such information can be obtained
with your SSN. With the Social Security number accessible
to so many people, it is relatively easy for someone
to fraudulently use your SSN to assume your identity
and gain access to your bank account, credit accounts,
utilities records, and other sources of personal
information. Therefore, it is wise to limit access
to your Social Security number whenever possible.
