One of the most important responsibilities of local law enforcement agencies is to keep the cities safe.
- What is safety?
- Is safety the sole responsibility of law enforcement agencies?
- Can you protect yourself in an emergency situation such as a theft, robbery, assault?
To understand the meaning of the term ‘safety’ it is important to study the crime rate in the area you live/work. Usually, places with a lower crime rate are considered safe and vice versa. While the law enforcement agencies are responsible for creating a safe environment for us, it is our duty to be vigilant and socially responsible as well. It is never a good idea to try to play ‘hero’ in such situations. Instead you should be vigilant about your surroundings and make mental notes on suspicious persons or vehicles. You can always help the agencies by giving a good description of what you see. Train yourself to look for important information on suspicious persons or vehicles.
Suspect DescriptionMake note of the following information on suspicious persons and then call the police at 911.
- Hair color
- Eyes/color of eyes
- Clothing : Color of coat/shirt/pants/shoes
- Accessories: Hat, bracelet, etc.
- Additional information
- License Plate/State
- Direction of Travel
- Any damage to the vehicle
- Additional Information
The above is not rocket science. You just have to be vigilant and careful, and this requires training yourself to observe the most important information when you see a suspicious person or vehicle. It's hardly surprising that many crimes and accidents are prevented due to the input from callers who give good suspect descriptions on phone.
