other benefits Streamlining the paperwork for foreign workers in the US under different visa categories, the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have partnered to upgrade the I-765, form to apply for work permit and SSN with the same application form.
An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) issued to a foreign worker shows the employers that the foreign worker is authorized to work in the U.S. for the time specified therein. The Social Security Number (SSN) is issued as a unique identifier that, among other benefits is also used to report wages to the government. Earlier, workers had to apply to USCIS for an EAD and then do additional paperwork in-person at their local Social Security office to obtain an SSN.
The new, updated version of the Form I-765 allows the applicant to apply for both simultaneously. He does not have to visit the SSA office to get his SSN. Instead, the Form I-756 will have additional questions pertaining to the social security that USCIS will forward to the SSA office for further processing. This partnership between these two integral offices benefit the applicants who receive their approved EADs from USCIS by receiving their Social Security card from SSA within the following two weeks.
