Procedure for Applying for the OCI

Only visa applications can be submitted by 3rd party persons. The applicants need to submit their OCI applications themselves. There are 2 ways of applying for an OCI card:  In Person or By Post. An appointment is required for the OCI card application and the applicants are required to be at the BLS office at the time of appointment if they plan to apply in person. If applying in person take an appointment at the CKGS application center depending on your jurisdiction, fill the Order Form, fill the application form (Part A and Part B), attach photograph, supporting documents (2 sets), and fee, and attend the appointment. Give a valid email and phone number preferably mobile number during the appointment.
If applying by post certain things need to be taken into consideration:

  • If you are applying for OCI and Renunciation of Indian Citizenship together, send the documents in one single envelope.
  • Include a copy of Order form inside the Envelope.
  • Send printed shipping label along with copy if applying by post. The shipping label is generated in the email after you fill the Order Form.
  • Include return shipping label in the envelope for proper return of documents.
  • A self-addressed traceable return envelope must be submitted with the application. Choose a return service like Fed Ex or UPS where you can track the package with the important documents inside it
  • The address given on the return envelope must be the same as given in the application as proof of address.
  • Mention a valid email and phone number preferably mobile number in the application.
  • Handwritten UPS or Fedex air bill, blank air bills, and air bills with credit card information are not accepted by CKGS application center. The applicant has to provide a computerized prepaid printed airbill.
  • Postal applicants have to specify the name of the department outside the envelope. For example, Visa, PIO, OCI etc.
  • The fee for postal application cannot be paid in cash.

How to fill the OCI application form?

OCI Application Form:
There are 2 parts of OCI application- Part A and Part B.  Part A has to be filled online and printed. Once printed no overwriting or manual changes are allowed. If the applicant has committed a mistake in the online application, correction can be applied for under Miscellaneous Services. Part B can be filled manually (in legible capital letters in blue or black ink) or typed. After submitting Part A, Part B will automatically print out. The instructions that print out with the application need not be submitted. The applicants have to sign both Part A and Part B of the application. A file reference number will be generated automatically as an acknowledgment of submission of online application in Part A.

Family Application:
If the application is a joint family application then all the applicants have to reside in one place. A maximum of four persons including spouses and at most two minor children can make a joint application while applying online. If the family consists of five members then the husband and wife can apply for separate family applications. Part A has to be filled for each individual applicant and Part B can be filled once for the whole family.

The application is best viewed in Chrome/IE 8.0 and above.

Processing of OCI Card Application

OCI application normally takes 8-10 weeks for processing. The complete processing of OCI card involves a number of steps. The processing can be further delayed because of incomplete applications. Following is the general processing time and steps involved in applying for an OCI card:

  • Apply for the OCI Card: The application is sent for processing to Embassy/ Consulate and the final card is sent from Delhi, India. The whole process takes around 60 days.
  • After the OCI card is received by Consulate in the applicant's jurisdiction, he or she is required to send the original US passport. Once the passport is received by CKGS application center, the processing will resume. 3 days are required to send the US passport to the Consulate for a match up.
  • The Consulate requires 7 days to matchup the US passport with the OCI card.
  • The CKGS application center takes 3 days to ship the US passport and OCI card.

The processing time mentioned above is dependent on various factors like number of working days and time taken by the courier companies to deliver the passport.

Tracking OCI Application

The OCI application status can be tracked online. The applicants can visit the CKGS application website and track the status of their OCI application by entering the Tracking ID and the passport number or the web file number in the box provided.
