What happens if I lose my Social Security Card?
You can visit the office if you need a new card or have lost your Social Security card.
- You can get three replacement cards in 1 year and a total of 10 during your lifetime.
- Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, a change in the citizenship status or getting a green card after being on the H1 visa. Such card updates may not count toward these limits.
- If you are able to prove that you have lost your card and will prevent a significant hardship by getting a replacement, it may not count towards the total allowable replacement.
