Mission to 1 Million: US Embassy in India Reaches 500k Visas Processed in 2023

The U.S. Embassy in India has announced that they have officially processed half a mission visas in India, reaching the halfway point of their goal of processing one million visas in India by the end of 2023.

The U.S. Embassy in India has been tracking their “Mission to 1 Million” goal on their twitter page, and celebrated reaching their half a million milestone with a visit from Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Hugo Rodriguez from the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Reaching the halfway mark of their one million visa goal before the middle of the year is a good sign that they will likely reach a million processed visas by the end of 2023.

The one million visa goal is a collaboration between all the consulates in India including Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, and New Delhi. Factors contributing to the achievement of this goal include increasing staff at the consulates, opening up more interview slots, expanding the scope of dropbox facilities, and also the opening of the new Hyderabad office, which is aiming to process three times the amount of visas as their previous location – up to 3,500 per day.

The main focus of the U.S. Embassy in India is to process as many work visas, such as H-1B and L visas, as possible as these work visas are so important for the U.S. economy. As of May 2023, wait times for work visas at certain consulates are below 60 days, which is a definite improvement from just 6 months ago. The consulates are also working to ensure that all student visas with fall start dates are processed in time.

With the news that the USCIS will soon be piloting a program for certain petition-based nonimmigrant work visas to be able to renew their visas in the United States rather than having to travel back home to renew their visas, we can expect that this will help speed up visa processing even further if the pilot is successful and is ultimately implemented permanently.

The U.S. Embassy in India has made great progress towards their ambitious goal of processing one million visas by the end of 2023. We look forward to further updates as the year progresses to see if they can ultimately reach their goal!
