What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?
The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program offers a chance at obtaining a green card to individuals from countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States. In the fiscal year of 2026, the State Department plans to allocate 55,000 green cards to eligible foreign nationals. These lucky recipients will be chosen through a randomized computer drawing, often referred to as a lottery, among those who meet the program’s eligibility criteria.

Who is Eligible for the DV Lottery?
Eligibility for the DV Lottery is determined by an applicant’s country of origin and qualifications. Each year, diversity visas are distributed among six geographic regions, with no country receiving more than 7% of the available visas.
To qualify, you must meet one of the following:
- Education: Have at least a high school education or its equivalent.

How to Apply for the 2026 Diversity Visa Lottery
When the registration period opens, you will submit your entry for the 2026 DV lottery on the official Electronic Diversity Visa Program website.
Information you will need to apply includes:
- Name, exactly as it appears on your passport
- Gender – male or female
- Date of birth
- City of birth
- Country of birth
- Country of eligibility for DV program
- Recent photographs of yourself, your spouse, and children
- Mailing address
- Current country of residence
- Phone number
- Email address
- Highest level of education
- Current marital status
- Number of children
Once you’ve submitted your entry, print out your confirmation page and keep the confirmation number safe. This number is crucial for checking your entry status once results are available in May 2025.
Diversity Visa Lottery Selection Process
The DV program selects around 55,000 individuals each year through a randomized computer drawing. Selection for these visas is randomly generated in a lottery-type process from the pool of submitted electronic entries during the open registration period for that specific fiscal year.
If you are selected, you will be eligible to apply for a visa, but selection does not guarantee a visa interview or approval. Being selected simply grants you the chance to participate in the program and pursue a U.S. green card.
Results will be available on the Electronic Diversity Visa Program website. You can check your selection status by entering your confirmation number and personal details. Beware of fraudulent emails; the U.S. government does not notify selectees by email or phone. You must check your status online.
Please note that selection in the DV lottery doesn’t automatically guarantee that you’ll receive a visa interview or subsequent visa. The USCIS’s 10 Tips for Applying for the DV-2026 Lottery
1. Read the instructions carefully: Visit travel.state.gov/dv for detailed instructions. Do not enter if you do not meet the qualifications.
2. Apply only on the official website: Submit your entry at dvprogram.state.gov. This is the only legitimate entry site. Beware of fraud and scams.
3. There is no entry fee: If anyone asks for money to help you enter the lottery, they are trying to scam you. The entry process is entirely free.
4. Submit your entry yourself: Avoid using intermediaries to apply on your behalf, as unscrupulous facilitators might withhold your confirmation number.
5. Use a recent photo: The photo must be taken within the last six months. Using an old or incorrect photo can disqualify your entry.
6. Only one entry per person: Multiple entries for one person will result in disqualification.
7. List all family members: Include your spouse and all unmarried children under 21, even if they do not plan to immigrate with you.
8. Keep your confirmation number safe: This is the only way to check if you have been selected.
