The US Department of State recently announced the extension of the interview waiver options for certain eligible non-immigrant visa applicants for the entirety of 2024 and beyond. This extension builds upon the success of the waiver program that was initially implemented to address extensive processing delays at US Consulates and Embassies.
Background and Extension
The waiver of US Visa interviews for specific non-immigrants began in 2022, aiming to streamline the process for visa holders such as H1B, H4, L1, F1, and others. The program had aimed to streamline the application process by incorporating a set of online questions, eliminating the need for an in-person interview in certain cases.
Initially set from January 1st, 2022, to December 31st, 2022, the program’s success led to an extension until December 31st, 2023. The latest announcement extends these provisions further.

Eligible Non-immigrant Visa Categories for In-Person Interview Waiver
The US Department of State, in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security, continues to grant Consular Officers the authority to waive in-person interviews for certain visa applicants deemed of national interest. Eligible categories include:
- First-time H2 visa applicants (H2A, H2B)
- Other non-immigrant visa applicants in various categories like H1B, F and M visas (international students), J visas (academic exchange visitors), L1 visas (intracompany transfers), O1 visas (extraordinary ability individuals), P visas (artists, athletes, entertainers), Q visas (international cultural exchange program participants), and qualifying dependents.
48-Month Rule for Interview Waiver Renewal
For applicants seeking renewal in the same visa category within 48 months of the visa’s expiry, the interview waiver (or Dropbox) remains available, excluding a few visa types like ‘Blanket L1.’ This rule applies to most visa categories, ensuring an easier renewal process.
48-Month Rule for Applying in a Different Visa Category
The new rule permits non-immigrant visa applicants applying in a different visa category to receive an interview waiver if they meet specific criteria:
- Previously held a US Visa in any non-immigrant classification (except B1/B2 visas).
- Applying within 48 months from the expiration of the most recent US Visa.
This provision allows applicants to transition between visa categories smoothly, provided they meet the outlined criteria.
Duration of the 48-Month Interview Waiver Rule
Starting from January 1st, 2024, the 48-month interview waiver rule for applicants in different visa categories will be effective throughout 2024. This rule will persist until further notice and undergo annual review.
General Requirements for Interview Waiver
Applicants seeking interview waivers must fulfill specific criteria:
- Applying in their country of residence or nationality.
- No prior US Visa refusals without subsequent approval or resolution.
- No apparent or potential ineligibility for a US Visa.
However, it’s crucial to note that the discretion of the US Consular officer remains, as they may require an in-person interview despite meeting the waiver criteria.
This extension aims to facilitate a smoother visa application process for eligible non-immigrants, offering flexibility in renewals and transitions between visa categories while maintaining the necessary standards for visa approval.
