The H1B Visa Lottery for fiscal year 2024 is just around the corner, and if you’re planning on finding a sponsor to submit an application for you on your behalf, now is the time to start looking.
The H1B Visa Lottery was put into place due to the high demand for H1B visas. This process allows the USCIS to choose applicants based on random selection in order to meet the annual quota cap.
With under 100 days before the likely opening of the H1B 2024 Visa Lottery portal, it’s important that you are able to find an employer early on who is willing to put your name in the H1B Lottery electronic portal and to submit a $10 non–refundable registration fee. This could be a current employer you have if you are looking to come to the U.S., or a new employer if you are either looking to immigrate to the U.S. or are on an alternative stay here already.
It is estimated that in 2023, the H1B 2024 Visa Lottery electronic portal will open on March 1. This is following the previous pattern of an early March opening date in prior years.
If the portal opens on March 1, 2023, here are some likely dates to follow:
March 1 – March 17: H1B Visa Lottery 2024 electronic portal is open
April 1: Initial date for accepting applications for those chosen in the lottery
April 1 – June 30: Initial window for those who were selected in the lottery to file applications (I-29)
The announcement of the actual H1B Visa Lottery 2024 dates will likely come at the end of January 2023, however, these estimated dates can help you better prepare to find a willing employer. Once you do find an employer, be sure to set reminders on your calendar to check in with them as we get closer to the electronic portal open date so that they don’t miss the submission window. The employer must submit your name on your behalf, and pay a one-time, non-refundable $10 fee.
In FY 2024, 85,000 total applicants will be chosen from the H1B Lottery – 65,000 standard and 20,000 additional for advanced degree designations (Master’s degree holders only). Experts in the immigration field are estimating that there will likely be over half a million registrations in FY 2024’s H1B Lottery. The demand for H1B visas continues to grow, and FY 2024’s registrations will likely hit a new record.
As a reminder, the USCIS Fiscal Year 2024 starts on October 1, 2023, and ends on September 30, 2024. The USCIS accepts petitions for the H1B visa for the following fiscal year around 6 months prior to the start of the next fiscal year.
Check back in late January 2023 for our announcement of the H1B Lottery 2024 electronic portal opening dates! For more information on the H1B Visa Lottery, visit the USCIS website.
