The U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad has recently commenced operations at its new facility, resulting in significant improvements in efficiency and reduced appointment wait times. Several factors have contributed to these positive changes, and according to Consul General Jennifer Larson, the new location will only continue to benefit visa processing times and appointment wait times throughout India as the facility reaches its full potential.
There are multiple ways in which the new Hyderabad location is planning on combating visa appointment wait times and increasing daily visa processing. This includes adding more counters to see more people throughout the day, introducing “surge” days for students, and extending the drop box option to all visa categories.
Larson commented that once the new location is fully staffed, they’ll be equipped to process up to 3,500 visas per day – more than triple the amount of visas processed daily at the previous Paigah Palace location. This is attributed to the ability to hire a significantly higher number of staff, which allows for more visa interviews being conducted daily than ever before.
Additionally, the number of windows has dramatically increased – from only 16 windows at the old location to a whopping 54 windows at the Nanakramguda facility. This supports the need to hire more consular offices and raises the amount of people that are able to be assisted or interviewed each day.
Another adjustment that has resulted in visa appointment wait time improvements is the new eligibility requirements for the drop box program, or visa interview waiver. Previously, you were only eligible for an interview waiver if reapplying for a visa in the same category as your previous visa. Now, even if you had a F1 visa and now want to apply for a B1 visa, you are eligible for drop box to complete your application. The stamping process for the Hyderabad drop box program is four to six weeks.
The ‘surge’ days are also a great addition, geared towards those looking for student visas. On these special “surge” days, more slots will be available for those who are in need of an interview for a student visa. This will cut down appointment wait times and ensure that students are seen in a timely manner in order to make it to the US in time for the beginning of their study programs.
A few months ago, visa interview appointment wait times were almost at 1,000 days for visitor visas. Now, this wait time has been cut down by more than six months, which is attributed to better processing at the new Hyderabad location, increased staffing, new interview waiver eligibility options, and finally bouncing back from COVID-19 setbacks.
Overall, the new Hyderabad Consulate facility has greatly improved visa processing in India, and will continue to do so as they become fully staffed and more efficient. We look forward to seeing visa processing rise and visa appointment wait times increase as the U.S. Embassy in India works towards improvements across all their consulate locations.

The new facility is located at Sy. No. 115/1, Financial District, Nanakramguda, Hyderabad, Telangana, 500032, and has been in operation since March 20, 2023. Operations at the previous Paigah Palace location ceased on March 15, 2023.
