What is the Diversity Visa Lottery Program?
The Diversity Visa Program is a green card lottery that allows natives from countries that have historically low immigration rates to the U.S. a chance to apply for the opportunity to get a U.S. green card. Registrations are completed online and then a random selection is made through a drawing to select which entrants can continue with their visa application.
Diversity Visa Lottery 2025 Eligibility
In order to enter into the 2025 Diversity Visa Program lottery, you must meet certain eligibility requirements. The Diversity Visas are split up among six geographic regions and there is a 7% cap in place that prevents any one country from receiving more than 7% of all available DVs in one year.
In addition to being a citizen of any of the eligible DV countries listed in the DV-2025 Instructions, you must also:
- Have a high school education or its equivalent
- Have 2 years of work experience within the past 5 years of in an occupation that requires at least 2 years of training and experience to perform
You may also qualify if your spouse or parent is a native of a country in the list linked above.
How to Apply for the 2025 Diversity Visa Lottery
To submit a registration for the 2025 Diversity Visa, you will first navigate to the DV Program website.
NoteIt is easy and free to submit your own application online. Beware of scams or frauds that create websites that appear to be U.S. government websites that charge for applications.
Before you begin the application process, you will need to ensure that you have the correct photographs ready to upload. You will need your picture as well as pictures for any dependents that will be included in your application. Check the DV-2025 instructions which are linked on the DV Program website for entry photo requirements.
Next, you’ll click on the “Begin Entry” button to start your registration. The entry form is two parts, one for you, the primary entrant, and the second for any dependents if you have any. Ensure that each part is filled out completely before moving on to the next part of the form.
NoteYou may only complete one entry per person during each entry period. More than one entry for an entry period will result in the disqualification of your entry.
Once you submit your DV-2025 registration, you will see a confirmation screen that includes a unique confirmation number. Make sure that you print the confirmation screen and take down your unique confirmation number and save it for your records. You’ll need this confirmation number to check your entry status.
How to Check Your 2025 Diversity Visa Lottery Entry Status
Your Diversity Visa entrant status should be available to check on or around May 4, 2024. During this time, you can go to the DV Program website and enter in your confirmation number, which you received after submitting your entry, to check the status of your entry.
It is important to remember that the DOS does not notify you via mail or email that you have been selected for the DV lottery. You must check your entry status manually using your unique confirmation number online through the DV Program website.
If you have been selected, you should complete an online DS-260 as soon as possible to get your interview appointment scheduled.
All DV lottery selectees must be issued visas by September 30, 2025.
