The permanent resident card or green card is the evidence of a legal right to live and work in the United States. The validity of a US green card is 10 years. The expiration date is printed on the front side of card. A green card must be renewed within 6 months before the expiration date to maintain permanent residency in USA.
How to renew your expired green card? Renewing green card can by done by filing Form I-90 with USCIS. Application for green card renewal can filed online or by submitting it via postal mail along with the applicable filing fee.
If you are traveling during the last 6 months of the validated time, you must return back to the US before one year from the departure date and before the card expires. If you do not return to the US before the card expires, you must contact the nearest American Consulate, USCIS office, or Port of Entry before attempting to file Form I-90 for a green card.
Green Card Renewal Fee
The cost to renew or replace green card is $450 USD, which includes a $365 filing fee and a $85 biometrics fee. Both green card renewal fees must be paid along with the green card renewal application Form I-90. These two fees can be paid together combined in one check or money order.
How to Renew Green Card
Application for green card renewal may filed online through e-filing or by filing and mailing a paper application. The application to renew green card is Form I-90, which you can download and mail or file online.
- Filing green card renewal online: Applicant may e-file green card renewal application online by visiting USCIS e-Filing. The fee can be paid online electronically using your credit card.
- Mailing paper application: Applicant must download, complete, and send green card renewal Form I-90 along with the filing fees to the appropriate mailing address.
All green card renewal applications (Form I-90), regardless of the state of residence, must be mailed with application fee of $365 and a Biometrics fee of $85 to one of the following addresses:

Do NOT include any initial evidence and supporting documentation when submitting the Form I-90 to the Los Angeles Lockbox.
All applicants will receive an appointment notice for a biometric processing at an ASC (application service center) near you in the mail and will also specify the documents to be submitted at the time of appointment.
Once you file the application via mail or e-file, you will receive a case number with the receipt notice via mail. This case number should be used for all your application status tracking purpose. You can either check your green card renewal status online at USCIS website or you may call the USCIS National Customer Service Center (NCSC) at 1-800-375-5283. All information regarding your application such as your receipt number, Alien Registration Number, name, and date of birth should be handy when making the call.
If an application for green card renewal is rejected or denied, a notice via mail will inform you of the reasons for the revoke, and notify you of the proper appellate jurisdiction and the applicable deadlines, and provide you with the correct USCIS form to file an appeal.

Green Card Renewal for Conditional Residents
If you are a conditional resident whose conditional permanent resident status is about to expire, these instructions do not apply to you. To remove the conditions on permanent resident status and renew your green card, you must use file Form I-751, Petition to Remove the Conditions on Residence.
Form I-90 is not applicable for conditional residents. If you are a conditional resident and your status is expiring you must apply accordingly to remove the conditions.
- To remove conditions on residence for marriage based permanent resident status, file Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence; or
- If you became a conditional resident based on a financial investment in a U.S. business, submit Form I-829, Petition by Entrepreneur to Remove Conditions.
