As we age, we become more prone to health risks and accidents – but that doesn’t mean that seniors should be afraid to travel. Having medical coverage while traveling, especially in the United States, is crucial for travelers of any age, but especially for seniors. When visiting the United States, having travel medical insurance can give you peace of mind in the case of the unexpected. This is especially true for those who are older and are more at risk for needing healthcare while abroad. Additionally, medical costs in the United States are exorbitant, and simple medical treatment can cost thousands of dollars without insurance. Though travel medical insurance does tend to be more expensive for the elderly, there are still abundant quality plan options that can fit the needs of travelers at any age.

For many immigrants who live and work in the US, having their parents come and visit from overseas is a top priority. Some parents choose to stay for an extended period of time on a visitors visa, while others come for a shorter stay. Regardless of how long parents and relatives come to visit, it is imperative to have visitors insurance for them to have the best possible stay in the USA.

The price for travel medical insurance tends to increase as travelers age. Many senior travel medical insurance plans will become more expensive and provide less coverage once a traveler is 70+ years of age. Plan options are extremely limited for travelers 80 years of age and above, however, they do exist and are ultimately a necessity when it comes to traveling as a senior.

Best Travel Insurance for Seniors

We understand that choosing the best travel insurance for parents visiting USA can be a difficult task considering there are many options and things like premiums, deductibles, and benefits to consider. The following three plans are considered some of the best travel insurance plans for seniors on the market today.

USVisit-Pro

USVisit-Pro is a great coverage option for seniors traveling to the U.S. due to its inclusion of both pre-existing conditions and new conditions. For pre-existing conditions, coverage through age 69 is up to $30K while ages 70-74 is up to $20K (please note this plan is not eligible for seniors above age 74). After satisfying a $1,000 deductible per incident, this plan pays 80% of eligible medical expenses within the United Healthcare PPO network and 60% outside of the PPO network. It also covers COVID-19 related conditions if the virus is contracted after the policy-effective date. For new conditions, this plan offers policy maximums of up to $250K through age 69. Ages 70-74 have a policy max of $50K for new conditions.

CoverAmerica – Gold

This comprehensive coverage plan has an extensive PPO network within United Health and provides 100% coverage in network after the deductible is satisfied. Moreover, after December 1, 2021 anyone who is covered on Cover America Gold will have COVID coverage regardless of the length of their purchased policy period which implies comprehensive coverage for Covid-19 where it will be treated as any other illness. Right from a free Public Health Emergency Screening even when a travel warning is in place for the country of destination to coverage of all medical expenses if the virus was contracted after purchasing the policy.

Ideal for visitors to the USA, this plan includes emergency dental treatment, eye exams, $15 urgent care copay (waived if $0 deductible is selected) and offers up to policy maximum in coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions for travelers under 70 and up to $30,000 for travelers age 70-79.

Patriot America Plus

International Medical Group’s Patriot America Plus policy is a comprehensive coverage plan that has a PPO network. Ideal for visitors to the USA, this plan is renewable, cancelable and offers up to $500,000 in coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions for travelers who are less than 70 years of age.

While comparing plans based on the senior travelers needs, it is important to consider the travelers overall health, any pre-existing medical conditions, what activities the traveler has planned while visiting and how long the traveler is staying. If the senior traveler is facing health issues, has ambitious activities planned or is staying for an extended period of time, a comprehensive plan with a higher policy maximum may be the best option.

However, just as every senior traveler has different needs, every trip is unique in its own right, so be sure to consider all the trip and traveler details before purchasing a plan. And as always, read the policy details carefully before purchasing so you know exactly what is and is not covered.
