Visitors Insurance can be purchased either before the visitor embarks on their travels, or upon their arrival in their destination. If you are purchasing a plan that covers during international travel, you should purchase the policy before they leave. You can choose the coverage start date to be the same as the journey start date.

I want to buy insurance for my parents. Should I buy a combined policy or a separate policy for each of them?

Either way is OK.

You can make the purchase either way and the price will remain the same. Purchasing the policies separately however, does tend to be easier to manage if any changes are needed to be made in travel plans or to the policy after purchasing.

What proof will I receive for buying the policy? Will I get an ID card?

Yes, after purchasing the policy online, you will receive a confirmation email with an attachment to your Insurance ID Card. You will want to take a print out of this and keep it with you should you need to use it during your travels.

How do I use the policy once I’ve purchased it?

Once you receive your insurance ID card via email, you can take a print out of it and present it to the doctor’s office or hospital upon visiting. The provider will either bill the insurance company directly, or ask you to pay the bill up front for any treatments or services received. Either way, you will need to go through the mandatory claims process in order to receive coverage or reimbursement for the applicable covered services as per the policy you purchased. For more information, refer to our article, Plan Usage: How to use the policy.

What doctors/Hospital can I go to? Is there a specific providers list?

In general you can go to any doctor or hospital of your choice, but for maximum benefit, you should go within the Network recommended by the plan you purchased. You can find providers by looking at the "Provider Directory" for the plan you purchased. Refer to the Provider Directory given for each plan on the insurance main page.

However each insurance company have their own definition, hence it is advised to read more about it before buying a particular plan.

What is considered Pre-Existing Conditions?

A Pre-existing condition is any Injury, Illness or medical condition (s) which meets any of the following criteria: a) condition (s) that would have caused a person to seek medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment prior to the Effective Date of coverage under the Policy; 2) condition (s) for which manifestation, medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment was recommended, received, or noticed prior to the Effective Date of coverage under the Policy. Anything such as, cancer, high blood pressure, a heart condition, pregnancy, and any other illnesses or injuries that existed prior to purchasing a policy is considered to be a pre-existing condition.

Who determines if it is a Pre-Existing Condition?

The diagnosis of a pre-existing condition is completely up to the doctor or hospital at the time of visit. If your condition is deemed to be pre-existing based on past medical history and the nature of the illness or injury, the insurance company will not cover any expenses in relation to that condition.

Why are Pre-Existing Conditions not covered by visitors insurance plans?

Traveler's/Visitor insurance plans are short terms plans and if they were to cover pre-existing conditions they would end up paying much more then they get from the premium and can't run their business profitable.

Why should I purchase insurance if it does not cover pre-existing conditions?

Medical costs in the USA are very high and can be financially devastating, especially in the case of an unexpected illness or injury. Visitors insurance is a means to insure against such unanticipated medical emergencies and should not be viewed as a means to get medical treatment for existing medical problems.

Can I use visitors insurance to cover a planned surgery for my mother or father?

I want my father's full physical checkup done, is it covered?

No any routine medical visit/physical checkups are not covered under any visitors insurance policies due to the short term nature of the plans.
